Toledo's Hawkins Elementary strives for LEED Gold, using Wausau's windows for energy-efficient, natural light and ventilation

When Toledo Public Schools opened Hawkins Elementary last month, it was difficult to tell who had the biggest smiles: the students who would be the first to occupy the building, the teachers and staff who would enjoy working in classrooms filled with natural sunlight, or the community members who supported the area’s first, “green” school building.

Hawkins Elementary is part of Toledo Public Schools’ (TPS’ www.tps.org/) Building for Success program, which will rebuild or renovate more than 50 area schools during a 12-year period. Built at a cost of $11.4 million, Hawkins is the ninth TPS building designed by the Collaborative, www.thecollaborativeinc.com/, a group of local architectural and engineering firms formed to work together on Building for Success.

The 60,000-square-foot educational facility now is home to nearly 500 students, teachers and staff. Located at 5550 W. Bancroft Street in west Toledo, Hawkins also is the first TPS building registered to attain a Gold Level rating from the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® Green Building Rating System™, known as LEED for Schools.

Wausau Window and Wall Systems’ triple-glazed windows are a key feature of the building’s energy-efficient design. The building itself is oriented to optimize natural lighting. The more than 90 project-out, project-in and fixed window units in the school’s design boosted light levels in 90 percent of the classrooms and teaching spaces to at least 25 foot candles of natural light. All of the windows use low-maintenance, between-glass blinds to control light and privacy. Many of the windows used in classrooms are also operable with screens, which allow for natural ventilation.

School principal, Ann Baker, told the Toledo Free Press that the students were in awe of their new space. “They were like ‘wow, windows.’” She also noted, “The building feels healthier and is absolutely environmentally friendly. I think it will increase the children’s learning and brighten their day up.” Numerous studies have shown natural light to benefit students’ health and wellness, morale and attendance, as well as test scores.

Along with academic performance, TPS superintendent John Foley appreciates the thermal performance. “Energy-efficient windows are a staple in the construction of our new schools. The strict standards established by the Ohio School Facilities Commission require the use of energy-efficient windows, especially as we work toward achieving LEED.” He continues, “The windows in our new schools not only provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students, but the energy-efficient design of the windows saves the district money and energy.”

The need for a combination of energy-efficiency, durability, flexibility and value led Wausau’s regional sales manager Dave DeBettignies and local sales representative Michael Augustine to recommend windows from the Advantage by Wausau product offering, www.wausauwindow.com/products/index.cfm?ptype=advantage. “With the tight timelines, strict budgets, energy goals, and the large number of windows needed for the facilities involved, we knew that the high-performance, standard products offered through Advantage by Wausau would be a perfect value for many of TPS’ new buildings,” says Augustine.

Toledo-based glazing contractor Interstate Commercial Glass & Door, Inc., www.icgad.com /, worked with Wausau on Hawkins Elementary, as well as on several other TPS school buildings. Walt Erickson, vice president and estimator for Interstate, says, “Wausau has been very competitive in their pricing and their lead time. But to me, the number one priority is that Wausau’s quality is top-notch. Their Advantage program takes basic products with top-of-line quality like the 3250 Series windows and offers them with nice lead times and at competitive prices. It’s really been helpful to have speed, cost and quality. You don’t usually get all three.”

Wausau’s 3250 Series windows are proudly backed with up to a 10-year limited warranty, one of longest and most comprehensive in the industry. These project-out, project-in and fixed units feature a polyurethane thermal barrier and are rated as AAMA AW-70 Performance Class. They also are labeled by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) for energy performance.

Contributing to Hawkins’ energy and other green goals, all Wausau products meet the industry’s most stringent requirements for air infiltration, water resistance and structural integrity. Further enhancing performance and longevity, the 3250 Series windows’ 3.5-inch-deep aluminum frames used in the project were finished by Linetec with a durable, VOC-free, clear anodize finish, www.linetec.com. The company’s new, eco-friendly, anodize presents a frosty, matte finish that makes it an ideal choice for secondary billet, recycled content.

For Hawkins Elementary, 75 percent of the project’s construction waste was recycled and the final facility contains at least 25 percent recycled materials. Architect Dan Tabor, AIA, with The Collaborative, also notes, “Fifty-one percent of the construction materials used were manufactured within a 500-mile radius, which reduces the school’s carbon footprint.”

The school includes other energy-efficient, cost-effective design strategies, construction methods and building products: An on-site, helix wind turbine generates renewable energy, which directly assists in lighting the lobby and corridors when daylight is not an option. A white reflective roof reflects sunlight, keeping the building cool. An ice storage unit allows the school to utilize ice as part of its cooling system.

Tabor adds, “The building site takes advantage of a rain garden and bioswale to filter storm water, and the school utilizes low-flow water fixtures and waterless urinals, making the water usage 40 percent less than the average school.”

Beyond the operational and environmental benefits of the school, superintendent Foley expressed his hopes that Hawkins Elementary’s green features will serve as a “learning lab for students.”

On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people, organizations, corporations and governments will come together to make a bold statement about their concern for climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour symbolizes that by working together, each of us can have a positive impact in the fight against climate change, protecting our future and that of future generations.

In the U.S. where the impacts of climate change are already being felt, Earth Hour sends a message that Americans care about this issue and stand with the world in seeking to find solutions to the escalating climate crisis because if we don’t, who will.

Participation is easy. By flipping off your light switch on March 27th at 8:30 p.m. (your local time wherever you are) you will be casting your vote for action on climate change. We also encourage you to unplug everything… and start earlier, go all night!

Since its inception three years ago, Earth Hour’s non-partisan approach has captured the world’s imagination and became a global phenomenon. Nearly one billion people turned out for Earth Hour 2009 – involving 4,100 cities in 87 countries on seven continents.

Last year, 80 million Americans and 318 U.S. cities officially voted for action with their light switch, joining iconic landmarks from around the world that went dark for Earth Hour, including:

* Empire State Building
* Brooklyn Bridge
* Broadway Theater Marquees
* Las Vegas Strip
* United Nations Headquarters
* Golden Gate Bridge
* Seattle’s Space Needle
* Church of Latter-Day Saints Temple
* Gateway Arch in St. Louis
* Great Pyramids of Giza
* Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens
* Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro
* St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
* Big Ben and Houses of Parliament in London
* Elysee Palace and Eiffel Tower in Paris
* Beijing’s Birds Nest and Water Cube
* Symphony of Lights in Hong Kong
* Sydney’s Opera House

SES Engineering Group, LLC is assisting Green Place Detroit, a 501 C3 organization, and a group of students from Cesar Chavez Academy with the site design of a sustainable home in Southwest Detroit. The home is currently in the planning stages and is to be constructed in spring of 2010. Green Place Detroit has established a program to teach middle school students from the charter school how to design, permit and construct a new sustainable home just a few blocks from the school, in the City of Detroit. The home is to be constructed out of local materials to include structural panels salvaged from nearby. The project is also to include a photovoltaic array as well as natural lighting, passive solar and sustainable landscape architecture. SES is providing civil engineering services as well as assisting with teaching the students about the design and approval process.

The students meet once a week with Green Place Detroit to work on the project and to obtain guidance from the design professionals involved in the project. Once the home is completed it will be sold for a modest amount to a disadvantaged family in the area. “It is very rewarding working with the students and it is equally rewarding knowing that we are helping Green Place Detroit make a difference in these students lives as well as the eventual owners of the home” – Tim S. Storey, President, SES Engineering Group, LLC.

SES Engineering Group was founded by Tim S. Storey, PE, LEED AP. Tim earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1993 and is a licensed professional engineer in Michigan and Arizona. The company was founded to provide high quality Civil Engineering, Planning, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geotechnical Engineering, and Sustainable Design Consulting Services to a broad base of clients throughout many market sectors including retail, industrial, office, education, residential, and energy. It is our belief that our customers’ needs are of the utmost importance. Our team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals.

According to research report “Indian Natural Gas Sector Analysis”, India has set a target of producing 42.28 Billion Cubic Meter natural gas for FY 2009 of which only 32.8 Billion Cubic Meter have been produced. This huge shortfall is transformed in around 8 Million Metric Tons of LNG imports at comparatively higher international prices. The Indian government has further widened demand-supply gap by setting low prices which put immense subsidy pressure on domestic oil and marketing companies.

Despite intense pressure on oil and marketing companies, we have found that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) are positioning themselves as a future fuel option both for industrial and non-industrial sectors in the domestic market. The number of LPG customers is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 9% to touch 150 Million mark by FY 2013. This will result in a sharp growth of LPG demand, exerting more pressure on its domestic production and imports. CNG is also rapidly gaining recognition as cost effective and pollution free green fuel vehicle. In fact, with close to 0.6 Million vehicles, India stood second in terms of number of CNG vehicles in the Asia Pacific region behind only Pakistan. The number of CNG vehicles is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16% during FY 2010–FY 2013 on account of favorable government policies.
